What is the difference between hieroglyphics and cuneiform?

Hieroglyphics and cuneiform are two of the earliest known systems of writing. They both developed independently in different parts of the world around the same time, approximately 3500 BC.

Hieroglyphics

* Used images and symbols to represent sounds, words, and ideas

Cuneiform

* Developed in ancient Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq)

* About 600 cuneiform signs

* Used for legal and commercial documents, as well as historical and literary texts
