43. The white government is a mad elephant, I will enter its ear as a mosquito

Vallabhbhai made meticulous preparations for the smooth running of the Bardoli movement. He divided Bardoli tehsil into five parts and established a cantonment in each part. In these cantonments, basic facilities were raised for the residence of the farmers so that when the government took unjust actions and expelled the farmers from their homes, then they could come and live in these cantonments.

Arrangements were made to spread the message of Satyagraha to every village. Similarly, elaborate arrangements were made to bring the information about the incidents happening in the entire area to the central office. The publication of Satyagraha Khabar newspaper was started to bring the news of the movement to the general public. To run this movement, Sardar appealed to the people of Gujarat to donate freely so that the British government could be fought.

The people of Gujarat had full faith in Sardar Patel, so the people donated freely. After this the Sardar started visiting the villages of Bardoli area. He would go from village to village, gathering people and giving passionate speeches before them. The Sardar told the farmers that the lands of their ancestors could not be taken away from them. If the government does the work of snatching the land, then it should be understood that there is no such thing as government in the country, but robbers are ruling the state.

We know how to deal with robbers very well. He called upon the farmers that the leaders of the movement and the farmers should get along like milk and water. Unless the water mixed with milk boils, the milk cannot come out of the vessel and when the water starts boiling, the milk tries to put out the fire by coming out of the vessel. Thus both try to protect each other.

Sardar told the farmers that the Ghori government was behaving like a mad elephant. In front of her power, she considers farmers as mosquitoes. That's why we have to enter the ears of this mad elephant by becoming a mosquito. If we can do this, then this huge elephant will fall to the ground in agony.

Sardar's words touched the hearts and minds of the farmers. They blindly followed this determined leader. The farmers were confident that their leader would die only by taking the end of the problem and if this time he showed weakness by not supporting his leader, then the government would commit atrocities on the farmers fearlessly in future also.

That is why this movement got more support than all the earlier movements. On 12 June 1928, on the appeal of Gandhiji, Bardauli Day was celebrated all over the country.
