The early Etruscan social order was characterized by a strong aristocratic elite. This elite was composed of wealthy landowners and military leaders who held a great deal of power and influence in society. The common people, on the other hand, had very little say in political or social matters.
The Rise of the Middle Class
Over time, the Etruscan social order began to change. The rise of a middle class of merchants and artisans led to a greater degree of social mobility. These new social groups began to challenge the power of the traditional aristocracy.
The Reforms of Cleomenes
In the 6th century BC, the Etruscan king Cleomenes introduced a series of reforms that further weakened the power of the aristocracy. Cleomenes gave the common people a greater say in government and also encouraged the development of trade and commerce.
The Etruscan Social Order in Decline
By the 5th century BC, the Etruscan social order was in decline. The Etruscans were facing increasing pressure from the Romans and other Italic peoples. In addition, the rise of a new economic elite was leading to greater social inequality.
The Final End of Etruscan Rule
In 265 BC, the Romans finally conquered the Etruscans. With the fall of their cities, the Etruscan social order came to an end. The Etruscans were assimilated into Roman society and their culture was gradually lost.
