Diaz was born in Portugal around 1450. He was a skilled navigator and explorer who had already made several voyages along the coast of Africa before his famous expedition in 1488. In that year, he set out from Lisbon with a fleet of three ships with the goal of finding a sea route to India.
After sailing down the coast of Africa, Diaz encountered strong winds and storms that forced him to turn back. However, he continued south and eventually reached the Cape of Good Hope. He named it "Cabo das Tormentas" (Cape of Storms) due to the rough seas he had encountered, but King John II of Portugal later renamed it "Cabo da Boa Esperança" (Cape of Good Hope) because it offered hope for a new route to India.
Diaz returned to Portugal in 1488 after a successful voyage that lasted 16 months. Although he did not reach India, his discovery of the Cape of Good Hope paved the way for the later Portuguese expeditions that would eventually establish a sea route to India and open up trade between Europe and Asia.
Bartholomew Diaz's voyage is considered one of the most significant achievements in the history of exploration. He is remembered as a skilled navigator, a courageous explorer, and a pioneer who helped to open up the world to new possibilities.
