Hugues Capet (c. 941 - 996)

Hugues Capet is the son of Hugh the Great, Count of Paris, Duke of the Franks. On the death of Louis V, the last Carolingian king, Hugh managed to get himself elected king thanks to the support of the Archbishop of Reims, Adalberon. He must then oppose the Carolingian pretender, Charles, Duke of Lorraine. Hugues decides to associate very quickly his son Robert II the Pious to the throne. His power is still meager compared to the other great lords of the kingdom. Hugues Capet died in 996, founding the Capetian dynasty which gave 32 kings to France.
