Historical story

Wansee Conference House

By the end of 1941 the mass murder of the Jews of Eastern Europe had become a major problem for the Nazi regime. Until then, deaths had been caused by mistreatment or poor living conditions in concentration camps and ghettos. Also since June 1941, after the invasion of the Soviet Union, actions were carried out by SS commandos to cleanse cities of racial and political enemies.

To find a solution to this problem, the head of the SD, Reinhardt Heydrich, called a high-level meeting in Berlin, on the shores of Lake Wansee. On January 20, 1942, a meeting took place where senior Nazi leaders sought a way to eliminate 11 million Jews in the fastest, most efficient, cheapest and most industrialized way possible. The resulting document of this conference was "the final solution to the Jewish question."
