Gynecology in Ancient Greece:Recipe to Promote Conception

Gynecology:baby in utero (the print dates back to the 1700s)

The ancient Greeks they were masters in the field of gynecology and medicine in general, so much so that they can be considered the forefathers of Western medical science (if you want to read an ancient eye prescription click here:https://www.pilloledistoria.it/10276/storia-antica/medicina-nellantica-grecia-ricetta-erofilo-curre-problemi-vista).

If we take into account the era to which we refer, we can consider their knowledge and their therapies in this regard, decidedly avant-garde.

What I report below is a prescription aimed at promoting conception contained in the Corpus Hippocraticum (V-VI century BC); the remedy certainly appears bizarre to our eyes, but we must keep in mind that back then, in the absence of adequate knowledge and means, all that could be done was to rely on natural remedies, albeit with far from certain results.

Here is the prescription in question:

"Before menstruation, apply a pessary (vaginal suppository) based on resin, cedar and ox fat twice a day" .
