Scenes of family life in the Middle Ages
What were the general foundations of medieval nutrition ?
In essence, we can say that compared to antiquity there were no substantial changes:the usual foods on the tables of the middle centuries were roughly the same as in previous eras.
This means that the daily diet was essentially based on the consumption of cereals, legumes and vegetables , while the only fairly common dessert was honey.
On feast days, however, they also ate meat, especially chicken and pork, dishes that were also common for the richest at other times of the year.
Later, the discovery of the New World forever changed Western gastronomy, making it richer and more varied, thanks to the introduction of foods hitherto unknown such as, among others, potatoes, tomatoes, chocolate and bananas ( see https://www.pilloledistoria.it/6415/storia-moderna/te-caffe-e-cioccolata-nellalificazione-delleuropa-moderna).
