Historical story

What was on the site of sainsburys wallington?

Before the Sainsbury's store was built in Wallington, the site was occupied by a variety of different buildings and businesses. In the early 1900s, the area was primarily residential, with a mix of Victorian and Edwardian terraced housing. There were also a few shops and businesses in the area, including a greengrocer, a butcher's shop, and a bakery.

In the 1930s, the area began to change character, as a number of factories and warehouses were built in the vicinity. The residential population declined, and the area became more industrial. During the Second World War, the area was heavily bombed, and many of the buildings were destroyed.

After the war, the area was rebuilt, and the Sainsbury's store was constructed on the site of the former residential housing. The store opened in 1955, and it has been a popular shopping destination for residents of Wallington ever since.
