The local legend of Chiang Saen states that at the time of Phaya Lawa Changkrarat Build the city of Hiran, Nakorn Ngoen, Yang Chiang Saen. His Highness built this temple in 1183 named "Chiang Man Chang Kung Monastery" and contained the left chin bone relic (Wa Mahanu Kang) at Phra Maha Sangha Rangsi. brought from Pataliputra Later, when Phaya Saen Phu built the city of Chiang Saen in around 1870 B.E., he entered through the Yang Thoeng Gate and came to stay here. He saw the remains of the old monastery, so he restored it to a new temple named "Aram Chiang Man" and in 2347 B.E., when a Lan Nayok army attacked the Burmese in Chiang Saen. So this temple was abandoned.

Buddha images were found at Wat Chiang Man. It is a metal Buddha image in the attitude of subduing Mara, crossed with diamonds (currently on display at the Chiang Saen National Museum). Age around the beginning of the 21st Buddhist century
