archaeological essence

Wat Phong (Kong Kaew Wirapak) is an ancient temple built in the Ayutthaya period. Located in the central area of the city island, along the riverbank on the south side. There is no evidence of when it was created. It is now an abandoned temple. Located in Pratuchai Subdistrict Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya District Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province The building that is important evidence is 1 pagoda.

At the Conference of the Chronicle, Volume 37, on the Old City which was compiled by Phraya Boranurak (Phon Dechakup), the monarch of Ayutthaya when R.S. 126 described it as In front of Wat Phong, there is a Thai Mon grocery store. and was a large brass market in the Ayutthaya period. Same as Wat Krachi

1. President Pagoda Wat Phong is mostly in a state of disrepair. The study of the shape of the pagoda can therefore be made from some of the remaining structural traces. It is clearly a rectangular chedi made of bricks with a high base. The outer surface of the chedi has traces of plaster. and stucco molding decorated in various shapes and patterns It is a chedi that has a mix between a pagoda and a bell shape, that is, one of the chedi shapes that scholars today call supreme castle pagoda The general appearance of this chedi is that there is a relic above the base. which is made into an elemental house like a prang but with a porch protruding on all four sides.

Inside each porch There are traces of stucco decorated with a standing Buddha image, only the west facade still appears a standing Buddha image in the posture of forgiveness, but the head is completely broken. other aspects Only traces of evidence were found, which only left the line of bricks. On the side wall of the west facade with decorative stucco Some remain to be seen Make a long line in the shape of a rectangle. resembling a small balustrade Plaster molding in front of the board along that line This style of stucco may be used as a symbol or imitating a hollow building.

Above the elemental house, make a low floor. Above the floor is a cylindrical shape, cascading up and down in descending order of 3 layers. In the corner of the lower floor there is also a stucco image of Garuda. which was damaged, leaving only the legs and private parts Standing on a naga, only 3 heads can be seen. The corner of the upper floor still has a stucco pattern as a lotus base to see some. Supports round bells

Eastern bell area Some of the bricks that form the bell are missing. showing the area of the room inside which has stone slabs separating the room in layers between bricks Above the bell was made a set of blooming lotuses which were slightly damaged and missing. Only one floor remains. As in the original picture, it was supposed to be the shape of a blooming lotus which was stacked up. is called Bua Klum Thao

Understanding that Wat Phong Chedi was influenced by northern arts as there are similar pagodas as well. The corner chedi of the main chedi of Wat Phra Sri Mahathat Sukhothai and some chedi at Chedi Chet Thaeo Temple Si Satchanalai District Sukhothai Province, etc.

It can be concluded that the style of this chedi of Wat Phong It should be a turning point where Ayutthaya craftsmen try to combine architectural styles that were influenced by Sukhothai with the arts that were originally used in Ayutthaya. Combining both art forms together Demonstrate the ability of the technicians to combine styles appropriately

In addition to the aforementioned pagodas When the Fine Arts Department excavated and renovated Wat Phong in 1997, another building was found in the temple area, namely

2. Temple rectangular in the east of the main chedi The back wall is adjacent to the chopping block base of the main chedi. Inside consists of square pillars. On the north side, there are traces of monks. On the west side is the Chukchi base. Brick floor
