archaeological essence

Kamphaeng Phet City is located on the east bank of the Ping River opposite Nakhon Chum City. and is the location of the present Kamphaeng Phet Province The city plan is trapezoidal, parallel to the Ping River. The original Kamphaeng Phet city wall was an embankment and a ditch. The inner city walls were laterite walls with parapets. The upper part is in the shape of a parapet and has a fortress around the gate, presumably built during the Ayutthaya period. In the center of Kamphaeng Phet there is Wat Phra Kaew and Wat Phra That as the center. On the north side of Wat Phra Kaew is an area known as Sa Mon, presumably as an ancient palace area. There are about 10 small temples in the city.

The area outside the city on the north side, about 500 meters from the city wall, is Aranyik. There are about 40 temples located on a gravel hill, a group of important ancient sites and the highlight of Kamphaeng Phet. Each ancient monument was constructed large and used laterite as a building material. Important temples include Wat Phra Non, Wat Phra Si Iriyabot, Wat Singh, Wat Chang Rop, Wat Awat Yai, etc.
