General Condition

Ancient City Pillar Shrine is located on the north side of Wat Mahathat. It is located to the north of the northern moat of Wat Mahathat. inside the city wall Sukhothai city center

Sukhothai is located on the plains of the river (Terrace) in the eastern foothills of the Pratak Mountains. The sediment deposited thus consists of soil, gravel, sand that is carried by the water from the mountains.

From the foothills, the area has a slope to the east to the Yom River, which is approximately 11 kilometers east of the ancient city. Klong Sao Ho which is a straight stream on the south side and Mae Lamphan Canal on the north and east side of the city and flows into the Yom River at the present Sukhothai Province.

The area between the ancient city of Sukhothai and the Yom River is a marsh. often have regular floods and some places have been trapped in water for months. Therefore, it may be one of the reasons why Sukhothai Old City is not located on the riverbank plain.

Geological conditions

Characteristic of the ancient site is a small building, made of bricks, raised on a high platform, with a square plan. There is a porch and stairs leading up to the front. facing east Above there is a round pillar made of laterite. The roof was originally shingle with clay tiles.

No evidence was found in the inscription mentioning the city pillar. In addition, there was no concept of City Pillar in the Sukhothai period. But the villagers have called this place Lak Muang since 1907. His Majesty the King ordered Phra Wichian Prakan to excavate and find out that There are laterite columns located in all four corners, 2 stacked columns each. In the middle there is a hole that is understood as a hole that is embedded in vision. Some may be the horoscope of the city. This assumption became a belief that This is really the City Pillar Shrine (Special Chia Chanphong 2003 :17)
