During the period of Mahajanapadas, Magadha expanded its power and gradually took the whole of North India under its suzerainty. The first to rule Magadha was the Haryanka dynasty, followed by the Shishu Nag and the Nanda dynasty. The Maurya dynasty started the rule by ending Nandu.

Haryanka dynasty

Bibasar was the first imperial ruler of the Haryanka dynasty. The reign of Bimbasara Shrenik is considered to be 544-49 BC. He ruled for 49 years, Bimbisara adopted the policy of matrimonial relations to expand his power and kingdom, developed mother skills and established marriage relations with Gandhara in him, He was a contemporary of Mahatma Buddha.

Jivaka was his royal doctor. In 492 AD, Ajatashatru got the rule by killing his father Bimbisara, Ajatashatru adopted war victory for the expansion of the kingdom. He used the diplomacy of his minister Vaskar for victory over the Vajji Sangha.

After Ajatashatru, his son Udayin became the ruler. Uday ji was of Jain religion. He founded the city of Pataliputra (Kusumpura) and made it his capital.

Shishunag dynasty

Shishunaga founded this dynasty in 412 BC by killing Nagdaska, the last ruler of the Haryanka dynasty. Shishunag made Vaishali his second capital apart from Pataliputra. Shishunaga's successor was Kalashoka or Kakavarna. During that time the second Buddhist council was organized in Vaishali.
