History of Nakhaspind Movement

The contribution of the Nakhaspind movement has been in breaking the salt law, especially during the days of the Civil Disobedience Movement.

The place called Nakhaspind is in Patna district which was chosen to break the salt law.

In Patna from 16 to 21 April 1930, the slogan of Nakhaspind Chalo used to resonate. The people here took the determination to carry on the Salt Satyagraha on the call of Mahatma Gandhi and never bowed down to the atrocities of the police.

On 16 April 1930, a group of people led by Ambika Kant Singh, manager of Searchlight and secretary of Patna Municipal Congress Committee, went to a place called Nakhaspinda in Patna to break the salt law.

But some people were also arrested by the police after stopping it on the way. This caused excitement among the people and they clashed with the police. Meanwhile, some groups from the other side reached Nakhaspind and broke the salt law by making salt. Many prominent leaders of Bihar participated in this movement, the main ones being Prof. Abdul Bari, Rajendra Prasad, Acharya JB Kripalani etc.
