History of Asia

What was true about Chinese families during Qing dynasty?

Patrilineal Descent

Descent was traced through the father's line. Only sons could inherit property.

Large Size

The average number of children per family was five to seven.

The larger families generally had more labor available for farming.

Living Arrangements

Multiple generations-- grandparents, parents, and unmarried children--often shared a home.

Extended family households predominated in northern China.

Family Roles

The father is the head of the household and makes all the major decisions.

The oldest son is next in line and is expected to take over the family business or farm when his father retires.

The mother manages the household and raises the children.

The daughters are expected to help their mother with housework and to eventually marry and move away.

Ancestral Worship

Chinese families venerate their ancestors. Altars are set up in the homes and are used for daily prayer and offerings of food and incense.

Ancestral worship is seen as a way to show respect for the dead and to ensure that the family line continues to prosper.
