Empress Wu Zetian was born in 624 AD in present-day Shanxi Province, China. She was brought up in a prominent family and received an excellent education. She was known for her intelligence, beauty, and ambition. In 650 AD, she became a concubine of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty. After Emperor Taizong died in 649 AD, Empress Wu became the consort of his son and successor, Emperor Gaozong.
Rise to Power
