Where does the name Marmaduke come from?

Marmaduke is a male given name of Frankish/Anglo-Saxon origins. It is derived from the Old German words "meri", meaning famous or renowned, and "thank", meaning think. The name is therefore interpreted as "famous thinker" or "renowned for thinking". Marmaduke is also believed to be derived from the Old English words "maer" (famous) and "duc" (leader), giving it the meaning "famous leader". The name has been in use since the Middle Ages, and it was particularly popular in England during the 13th and 14th centuries.
