The only Asian nation that began to industrialize in response to pressure from western powers is Japan. Japan was heavily influenced by Western ideas and technologies during the Meiji Restoration, and it was the only Asian country to successfully adopt Western-style industrialization. Meiji leaders began to westernize Japan in the mid-nineteenth century in order to avoid colonization by European powers. As a result, Japan began to industrialize rapidly and became a major world power.
