How did the USA become friends with Vietnam?

The United States and Vietnam are currently not considered to be friends, due to historical events and ideological differences. The relationship between the two countries faced significant strain due to the Vietnam War, which lasted from 1955 to 1975. After the war, Vietnam became a socialist republic and a close ally of the Soviet Union, while the US maintained its anti-communist stance.

Since then, there have been ongoing efforts towards normalizing diplomatic relations, but the relationship has been complex. The US has imposed various economic sanctions on Vietnam in the past, and there are still disagreements on issues such as human rights and sovereignty in the South China Sea.

In recent years, there have been some positive developments, including increased economic cooperation and cultural exchange between the two countries. However, there is still a long way to go before they can be considered true friends.
