Why did the Chinese leaders Jiang Jieshi and Mao Zedong unite?

Chinese leaders Jiang Jieshi and Mao Zedong did not unite. Instead, they were on opposing sides of the Chinese Civil War, leading the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party, respectively. The Chinese Civil War lasted from 1927 to 1949 and ended with the victory of Mao's Communist forces, leading to the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
