History of North America

What was the last battle between American Indians and federal troops?

The last battle between American Indian and federal troops was the Wounded Knee Massacre, which occurred on December 29, 1890, near Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The massacre resulted in the deaths of nearly 300 Lakota people, mostly women, children, and elders, and more than 25 U.S. soldiers. It is considered to be one of the darkest chapters in American history and marked the end of armed resistance by Native Americans against the United States government.
