History of North America

Where did the name of sutton coldfield come from?

Sutton Coldfield is a large town and civil parish in the West Midlands, England, 9 miles (14 km) north-east of Birmingham. Historically part of Warwickshire, it was transferred to the new county of West Midlands in 1974. Sutton Coldfield forms the northern part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The town had a population of 97,514 in the 2021 census.

The Sutton Coldfield area appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Sutone, meaning 'South Town'. The suffix 'Coldfield' was added later to distinguish this Sutton from the town of Sutton in Warwickshire. The name 'Coldfield' is thought to refer to the cold, clay soil in the area, which was not suitable for agriculture.
