If you're an autograph hunter, don't be honest

We all have, or have had, people whom we admire, of whom we declare ourselves unconditional followers, of whom we would like to have a souvenir or a signature. They can be one or more, athletes or scientists, men or women, young or old... and others, authentic autograph hunters, who collect signatures from anyone who "smells" famous regardless of their "art or virtue".

If you are one of the latter, I will give you some advice:«Don't be honest »

On one occasion an autograph hunter showed up at a reception for Frenchman Paul Valery (1871-1945). She approached the writer and, very proud, showed him his autograph album and asked for one with these words:

«I have not read any of his books, but I have been told that you are a famous writer. Please write me anything in this album and add your signature."

«Delighted madam», agreed the writer.

And he couldn't think of anything better than writing down the titles of his works with their corresponding prices.

And as a gift, another genius of Paul Valéry:

Books have the same enemies as man. Fire, humidity, time and its own content.
