History of Europe

Praetor, Quaestor, Kensol, Aedile, republican summary of important positions in Rome!

The order of each position in the Roman Republic is as follows.

0th place:Dictator

1st place:Consul

2nd place:Praetor (legal officer)

3rd place:Aedile (Aedile)

4th place:Tribune-Plebeians (Tribune)

5th place:Quaestor (Finance Officer)

Let's take a look at each position in Rome this time!

Praetor (legal officer)

In Japan, it is translated as a legal officer, but its authority is mostly military and includes the imperium, which is a military experience.

When the Republic of Rome was inaugurated, there was only one person, but in the first century of the civil war, there were eight people, and eventually 16 people.

According to one theory, it was a position before the consul was created, and the position that was originally in charge of the military was gradually transferred to the internal affairs when the consul was absent, and it came to be in charge of legal affairs.

As the number of provinces increased, so did the number of Praetors, and Praetors were placed in each province.

In Rome, the main role was to convene the Plebeian Council when the Consul was absent.

Aedile (Aedile)

An unfamiliar position as an aedile. Sometimes referred to as aedile. The notation of katakana in world history may be an eternal problem.

Azechi is a Japanese word that means to manage, and was in charge of managing public buildings and festivals.

It was the only Roman position that had been elected by the origins of two aristocrats and two commoners from the beginning, and it seems that it was functioning as a coordinating body in various fields other than the above.

It seems that the duties included price adjustment and gladiator management, and it can be said that it was an indispensable position for the smooth administration of Rome.

Maintaining security in the city of Rome is also a duty, and since he was also the top police force and was also in charge of road management at the same time, the breadth of his duties is not perfect!

Quaestor (Finance Officer)

Some argue that the Board of Audit is a more accurate translation, although it is sometimes translated as a finance minister.

Initially, there were two people, but by the end of the republican government, there were 40 people, and it seems that they had not only financed but also tried.

Originally, he was in the role of assisting the Consul, and the number increased because he was required to assist the Consul not only in the city's political affairs but also in combat.

It was also a gateway to Roman politics, and many of the people who later became consuls experienced Quaestor. It seems that becoming a quaestor was, so to speak, going on a career advancement course.

Kensol (Inspector General)

Census was my main job. Greece's Solon-developing country strives to get a good grasp of the domestic situation.

Of course, we did not just investigate the population, but also the financial status of each household. If you make a fake declaration here, you have the authority to punish whether you are a nobleman or a commoner. It is the national tax bureau in modern times.

Therefore, there is an opinion that it is better to translate this as a finance minister rather than an inspector general.

Its power is moderate, and it is believed that it was what is now called the Ministry of Finance.
