History of Europe

What did the English demand that Dutch do?

The Navigation Acts of 1651 and 1660

The English demanded that the Dutch should not carry goods from Europe to the English colonies in America. The English also demanded that the Dutch should pay a duty on all goods that they imported into England. The Dutch refused to comply with these demands, and the English retaliated by attacking Dutch ships and colonies in the Caribbean Sea and off the coast of Africa. The conflict between England and the Netherlands that followed is known as the Anglo-Dutch Wars, which lasted from 1652 to 1674.
