Why did the king and queen of Spain send christopher Columbus?

King and Queen of Spain sent Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic Ocean with instructions to find a route to the Indies for the same reasons that their Portuguese neighbors had sponsored exploration: because they knew that the Earth was round and that sailing directly across the Atlantic in a westward direction would eventually take them to Asia, and because they knew that the wealth of Asia, especially the trade in gold and spices, was immense and they wanted a share of that wealth for themselves.
