History of Europe

When did Athens control an empire?

Athens had a substantial empire from the 5th to the 4th century BC when it was the leader of the Delian League. The Athenian empire was centered on the city of Athens and its surrounding territories in Attica. The league was a military alliance of Greek city-states that was formed in 478 BC to defend against the Persian Empire. Over time, Athens came to dominate the league and used its power to expand its empire. The Athenian empire reached its peak in the 5th century BC, when it controlled much of the Aegean Sea, the coast of Asia Minor, and parts of Thrace and Macedonia. The Athenian empire was eventually defeated by the Spartan-led Peloponnesian League in the Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC).
