Italy is a parliamentary republic, with a multi-party system. The constitution of Italy dates back to 1948. The head of state is the president, who is elected by the parliament. The head of government is the prime minister, who is appointed by the president and must have the support of a majority in parliament. The unicameral parliament consists of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. The Chamber of Deputies is elected by proportional representation, while the Senate is elected by a combination of proportional representation and regional representatives.
