In what ways did the French Revolution personify ideals of Age Enlightenment?

Liberty:

- Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen proclaimed Liberty, Property, Security, and Resistance to Oppression inalienable rights.

- Freedom of press, speech, and religion achieved.

- Serfdom abolished; all male citizens entitled to vote regardless of wealth status.

Equality:

- Equality before the law established

- Privileges based on birth abolished

- Aristocratic titles removed, replaced with citizen

- Feudal dues and manorial courts abrogated

Fraternity:

- Nationalistic fraternity emerged that cut across geographic/social division to unite in pursuit of revolution

- The use of titles such as citoyen (male citizen) or citoyenne (female citizen) to convey shared citizenship and belonging

Separation of Church and State

- Catholic church disestablished as the religion of the nation
