History of Europe

Who were the first people to eat cheese?

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when humans began eating cheese, as it is part of a long-standing tradition that predates written history. However, one widely accepted theory traces the origins of cheesemaking back to the Middle East around 8000 BC. Ancient civilizations such as the Sumerians and Babylonians may have played a role in its early development.

Evidence suggests that cheesemaking techniques spread from the Middle East to Europe, North Africa, and other parts of the world over the following millennia. It eventually became an integral part of both subsistence living and cultural practices in various regions.
