History of Europe

What were hot drinks in Ancient Greece?

There was no tradition of drinking hot beverages in ancient Greece. Their drinks were typically served at room temperature or cooled. Some popular beverages in ancient Greece included:

Kykeon: A mixture of barley water, wine, and grated cheese, often flavored with herbs or spices.

Ptisane: A barley water sweetened with honey or fruit juice.

Hippocras: A spiced wine made from red wine and a mixture of spices such as cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg.

Mulled Wine: Wine sweetened with honey and infused with spices like pepper, cloves, and cinnamon, and warmed without letting it boil.

These beverages were usually consumed during social gatherings, festivals, or at the end of meals. Hot drinks, as we know them today, were not prevalent in ancient Greek culture.
