History of Europe

What were the three branches of Roman government?

1. The Senate: The Senate, or Senatus, was the most prestigious branch of the Roman government. It was made up of wealthy and powerful Roman citizens who had held high office. The Senate had the power to pass laws, but its decisions could be vetoed by the other branches of government.

2. The Consuls: The two consuls, or consules, were the elected heads of the Roman government. They were elected each year by the Roman people. The consuls were in charge of the military, foreign affairs, and the internal administration of Rome.

3. The Tribunes: The tribunes, or tribuni plebis, were elected by the plebeian, or non-noble, citizens of Rome. The tribunes had the power to veto laws passed by the Senate or the Consuls. They could also protect the rights of plebeian citizens.
