History of Europe

What started the Crusades?

The Crusades were a series of religious wars between Christians and Muslims that took place in the Middle Ages. The first Crusade was launched in 1095 by Pope Urban II, in response to the Seljuk Turks' capture of Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Other factors that contributed to the start of the Crusades include:

- The religious fervor of the European Christians, who were eager to liberate the Holy Land from Muslim control.

- The desire of European rulers to expand their territories and gain control of valuable trade routes.

- The economic opportunities that the Crusades offered, such as the possibility of acquiring new land and wealth.

- The political ambitions of the popes, who saw the Crusades as a way to increase their power and influence in Europe.
