History of Europe

Did the crusades help increase flow of trade in Europe?

The Crusades did not have a significant impact on increasing the flow of trade in Europe. While the Crusades did lead to increased contact between Europe and the Middle East, this contact was primarily religious and military in nature. There was little economic incentive for Europeans to trade with the Middle East during this time, as the region was embroiled in conflict and the transportation of goods was difficult and dangerous.

Additionally, the Crusades led to a decrease in trade between Europe and the Byzantine Empire, which had been a major trading partner for Europe prior to the Crusades. The Byzantines were resentful of the Crusaders' actions and imposed trade restrictions on them, which further limited the flow of trade in Europe.

Overall, the Crusades had a negative impact on the flow of trade in Europe.
