The first day of the Battle of the Somme, July 1, 1916, was the deadliest day in the history of the British Army. Over 57,470 British soldiers were killed, wounded, or went missing on that day. This represented more casualties than the British suffered in the Crimean War, the Boer War, and the Gallipoli Campaign combined.
