Leif Eriksson was one of the pioneers, if not the earliest European known to land in North America around the start of the 11th century, around five centuries before Christopher Columbus' well-known voyage to America in 1492. According to the Icelandic Sagas, Erikkson explored and attempted to set permanent settlements primarily for the goal of discovery and the potential rewards it presented rather than for reasons motivated by religious zeal or trade.
