History of Europe

What was the forecast about Russia in 1945?

The Soviet Union, of which Russia was the largest republic, emerged from World War II as a global power with a projected area of influence over Central and Eastern Europe. After the war, the United States and the Soviet Union were the two superpowers, and the war had shown the world the destructive potential of nuclear weapons. The Soviet Union had made significant industrial and military advances during the war, and its military power was feared by the United States and its allies.

There was a sense of uncertainty and fear about the Soviet Union's intentions in the postwar world, and some worried about the possibility of future conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Cold War, a period of geopolitical tension and rivalry between the two superpowers, would last for decades and shape international relations in the second half of the 20th century.
