Julius Caesar is assassinated

On March 15, 44 BCE, a group of senators, led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus, assassinated Julius Caesar as he entered the Senate House (Curia) near the Roman Forum. Caesar sustained 23 dagger wounds as the conspirators encircled him to ensure his death.
