Men walk on two feet

Hominids walk on two feet (c. 3.5mi BC - East Africa)

Tanzania, hominids are walking on two feet, leaving footprints in consolidated volcanic ash, known as tuff. The condition of the ash could preserve the footprints for millions of years.

Marks on the floor

In addition to the hominid footprints, there are marks of a large number of land animals and birds that participate in an annual migration, all heading north. While it is not known which species of hominid is leaving the footprints, they appear to be of two adults and a juvenile. The smallest of the adults deliberately follows in the footsteps of the largest of the three.

The largest footprints measure 18 to 23 cm in length, and their depth in the ash indicates that hominids are 1.20 to 1.50 m tall. The footprints show that, while crossing the ash expanse, one of the three hominids stopped to look to the left, possibly to guard against predators, common in the area. The hominid trail is crossed by that of a horse with a foal trotting beside him.
