Appomattox Court House , in the American Civil War , place in Virginia surrender of Confederate forces to those of the North on April 9, 1865. After an engagement with the Confederate cavalry, the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia surrounded in Appomattox, seat of Appomattox County, Virginia. 25 miles east of Lynchburg. Three miles northeast, at the former county seat known as Appomattox Court House, Gen. Robert E Lee resulted in Gen. Ulysses S. Grant , effectively ending the civil war. This site was virtually deserted after the county seat moved to the new town of Appomattox in 1892, but was declared a National Historic Monument in 1940. The buildings, including the McLean House where the formal dedication took place, have been restored to their 1865 condition. In 1954, the entire 968-hectare area was designated a historic park.
