Ancient history

flag of Russia

The flag of Russia consists of a rectangle with three horizontal lines in white at the top; blue at the center and red at the bottom.

Its origins date back to the late 18th century, but it was replaced by the flag of the USSR from 1917 to 1991.

Origin

The origin of the Russian flag follows the development of the merchant navy and war. Ships needed to be identified on the high seas, so nations started making emblems for their ships.

It is said that during a trip to the Netherlands, King Peter the Great was delighted with the flag of that country and decided to adopt it. He just took the precaution of inverting the order of the colors so that the two pavilions wouldn't look exactly the same.

Thus, the tricolor flag was established as a naval ensign in 1799 and a civil ensign in 1803. In 1883, during the reign of Tsar Nicholas II, it would become the official flag of the entire Russian Empire.

With the victory of the Russian Revolution of 1917, this flag and all symbols of the monarchy were abolished. In this way, the new symbol of Russia, now integrated into the USSR, became a red flag with a hammer and sickle for 74 years.

When the end of the USSR occurred, the Russian Parliament recovered the old tricolor flag.

Colors

The meaning of the colors changed over time. During the monarchy they symbolized:

  • White - God
  • Blue - King
  • Red - People

With the end of the USSR and the appearance of the Russian Federation, the colors gained a new interpretation:

  • White - Purity, Christian faith
  • Blue - Truth, and the Mother of God, Mary
  • Red - Strength

Presidential Flag

The presidential flag is the tricolor flag with the coat of arms. This is composed of the yellow double-headed eagle carrying the crown and other imperial symbols such as the sphere and the scepter on the paws. In the center, an image of Saint George.

Flag Day

Flag Day in Russia is celebrated on August 22, when the Russian Parliament passed the resolution that this would be the country's new flag.
