Ashoka attacked Kalinga to change this challenge as his subject. Kalinga was also a commercially important state at that time. Ashoka did the consecration in 261 BC. Kalinga war started. After this war, the extent of the Maurya Empire expanded to the vertical. This was the immediate benefit of the Kalinga war.

The conquest of Kalinga was an important event in the history of Magadha and all of India, after which a period of Mauryan conquests and kingdom expansion came to an end. A new era started after the Kalinga war and this was the era of peace, social progress and religious propaganda. From this the era of military victory and Digvijay ended and the war of spiritual science and Dhamma victory started.
