History of Champaran Satyagraha

Champaran district of Bihar was the first site of the experiment of Satyagraha in India by Mahatma Gandhi in 1917 AD. At that time, farmers were forced by the British to cultivate indigo.

The farmers had to compulsorily cultivate indigo in 3 katthas per bigha, which was called the three kathia system. In return, they did not even get proper wages. Due to this there was fierce resentment among the farmers and agricultural laborers.

In the Lucknow session of the Congress of 1916, Rajkumar Shukla had drawn the attention of the countrymen to this problem and Brajkishore Prasad presented a proposal, in which it was said that a committee should be formed to solve these problems,

On the request of Rajkumar Shukla, a resident of Murli Bharhwa village, Gandhiji reached Patna from Kolkata on 10 April 1917 and from there reached Motihari (Champaran) on 15 April 1917 via Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga.

Although the local administration declared his arrival and conduct illegal and arrested him, but later the then Lieutenant Governor of Bihar, Edward Gate called for Gandhiji's talks and proposed the formation of a committee to investigate the sufferings of the farmers, Which was called Champaran Committee.
