History of Santhal Rebellion (1855- 56 AD)

The impact of the Santhal rebellion was mainly in the areas from Bhagalpur to Raj Mahal (located in present-day Jharkhand). Exploitation and atrocities of landlords and moneylenders, forced labor by contractors from Santhal laborers as well as harsh action of police or administration or Adi Santhal were the reasons for the rebellion.

Although the Santhal rebellion was led by four brothers – Sidhu, Kanha, Bhairav and Chand, Sidhu and Kanhu contributed more actively to them. This rebellion/struggle continued for about 1 year, in which many Santhal leaders were martyred while fighting with the army with the latest weapons of the British. In 1880-81 AD, the Sathals revolted again, but this time also they were suppressed.
