History of Europe

How did European get slaves before Portugal established trading posts along the west African coast?

Before Portugal established trading posts along the west African coast, Europeans did not have significant access to African slaves. The transatlantic slave trade, as we know it, began in the 15th century when Portuguese explorers reached the west coast of Africa and established trade routes with local leaders. Prior to that, Europeans had limited contact with sub-Saharan Africa and did not engage in large-scale slave trade with the region.
