The concept of democracy in its modern sense did not exist in ancient Greece. While there were periods of democratic governance in its city-states, notably in Athens, the term "oligarchy" was not commonly used as its opposite. Instead, the contrast was often between monarchies or tyrannies and democratic or other forms of collective rule.
