Why did Britain join WW1?

Immediate Cause:

- Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria on June 28, 1914, by a Serbian nationalist

Underlying Reasons:

- Rivalry with Germany over colonies, trade, and naval power

- Concern about Germany's growing military strength

- Obligation to defend Belgium under the 1839 Treaty of London

- Desire to maintain the balance of power in Europe

- Public opinion in favor of supporting France and Russia
