History of Europe

Who were the people that settled new Netherlands?

The first permanent European settlers in the New Netherland colony were Dutch Protestants who sought religious and economic freedom. Among the early Dutch settlers were several hundred Walloons, who were French-speaking Protestants from Wallonia, Belgium. The Walloons formed a significant portion of the early Dutch population in New Netherland, and they played an important role in the colony's development. Other early settlers came from other Protestant countries, such as England and Germany. Although religious freedom was a core principle of the colony, Jews and Catholics were not permitted to settle in New Netherland.
