Did Great Britain and France want the Germans to be punished for destruction caused by World War 1?

The victors of World War 1, including Great Britain and France, did seek to punish Germany for its role in starting the war and the devastation it caused. The Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919, imposed various penalties and limitations on Germany. These included territorial losses, disarmament measures, and the payment of substantial war reparations. The reparations were intended to compensate the Allied Powers for the damage inflicted by Germany during the war. However, the economic burden imposed on Germany by the reparations had severe consequences, leading to political instability and economic hardship in the country during the interwar period.
